Residential Solar Installation
Rooftop solar systems for houses, villas and apartments — sized to your monthly units, roof space and budget.
Rooftop Solar for Your Home
A residential solar system turns your unused roof into a source of daytime electricity. Panels generate power whenever there is sunlight, your home uses it first, and — with an on-grid system and net meter — surplus units can be exported to the grid and adjusted against your bill, as per the applicable net-metering rules.
For many families in Kanpur, Lucknow and across Uttar Pradesh, summer air-conditioning pushes bills up sharply. A correctly sized rooftop system can offset a meaningful share of that consumption. How much depends on your usage, roof and tariff — which is why we start with your bill, not a fixed package.
Benefits of Home Rooftop Solar
- Lower dependence on the grid during daylight hours
- Potential long-term bill savings, depending on usage and tariff
- Uses existing roof space, with elevated structures available to keep terraces usable
- Clean energy generated where it is used
- Possible financial assistance for eligible households, subject to scheme rules
How to Estimate the Right System Size
System size is measured in kilowatts (kW). To get a first estimate:
- Find your monthly units. Your electricity bill shows consumption in kWh (units). Average a summer and a winter bill.
- Estimate generation per kW. In Uttar Pradesh, 1 kW of well-placed panels may generate roughly 3.5–4.5 units a day, or about 110–135 units a month, depending on orientation, shading and season.
- Divide and round. Monthly units ÷ monthly generation per kW gives an indicative size. Then check it against your roof area and sanctioned load.
| Average monthly use | Indicative system size* | Approx. shadow-free roof |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ~150 units | 1–2 kW | ~100–200 sq. ft. |
| ~150–300 units | 2–3 kW (a common choice for a 3 kW solar system) | ~200–300 sq. ft. |
| ~300–600 units | 3–5 kW (5 kW solar system range) | ~300–500 sq. ft. |
| ~600–1,200 units | 5–10 kW (up to a 10 kW solar system) | ~500–1,000 sq. ft. |
*Indicative only, based on ~120 units per kW per month and ~100 sq. ft. per kW. Your actual recommendation depends on a site assessment.

On-Grid, Off-Grid and Hybrid Systems
On-grid (grid-tied)
Connected to the electricity grid without batteries. It is usually the simplest and most economical option for homes with a reliable supply, and works with net metering. It does not supply power during a grid outage.
Off-grid
Runs independently using batteries to store energy for use at night or during outages. Suited to locations with no or very unreliable grid supply, but batteries add cost and need replacement over time.
Hybrid
Connected to the grid and also equipped with batteries. It can back up selected loads during power cuts while still working with the grid. A good fit where outages are frequent and backup matters.

What Affects the Cost of Home Solar?
- System capacity (kW)
- Panel type and wattage, and the inverter brand and type
- Mounting structure — standard, elevated or custom
- Roof type, building height and cable lengths
- Batteries, if you choose a hybrid or off-grid system
- Metering, approval and net-metering charges
We explain each of these in our guide to solar system cost in Uttar Pradesh.
Residential Solar Subsidy
Eligible households may receive central financial assistance under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana for grid-connected rooftop solar. The amount depends on system capacity and the applicant must meet the scheme conditions, apply through the national portal and use a registered vendor.
Scheme rules and amounts can change. Always confirm eligibility and current assistance on the official portal pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Subsidy approval is decided by the authorities, not by the installer. Read our PM Surya Ghar guide.
Verify subsidy wording against current official guidelines before publication

As a planning guide, each kilowatt of panels typically needs around 80–100 sq. ft. of shadow-free roof, depending on panel wattage and the mounting layout. A site visit confirms the usable area after accounting for water tanks, staircases and shading.
Standard on-grid systems shut down during a grid outage for safety reasons, so they do not provide backup. If backup is important, a hybrid system with batteries can supply selected loads during power cuts.
You will need the property owner's consent, and for apartments the society's permission for using the common roof. Net-metering applications are usually made in the name of the electricity connection holder.
Physical installation of a typical home system usually takes a few days once materials are ready. The full process, including approvals and net-meter installation by the electricity distribution company, can take longer.
Eligible households may receive central financial assistance under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, subject to the scheme's conditions. Read our PM Surya Ghar guide and confirm current details on the official portal before deciding.
